In 1957, Alexandre Astruc produces The End of Desire, based on a novel by Guy de Maupassant, with Maria Schell, Christian Marquand and the luminous landscapes of Normandy exquisitely captured by the camera of Claude Renoir.

At the end of the 19th c., Jeanne Dandieu lives in the family’s manorhouse with her parents and Rosalie, a peasant friend she grew up with who works as her servant. One day, after her small boat capsizes, Jeanne is rescued by local fishermen and brought back home by a handsome young man, Julien de La Mare. Jeanne falls in love, and Julien asks for her hand.

The couple sets up in the family house and Jeanne is the picture of happiness. But soon, their lives become miserable. Julien is annoyed by his sensitive wife, and prefers to spend his nights with Rosalie. Pregnant, she quits her job and leaves the house at the birth of her baby girl.

Six years later, Jeanne is now the mother of a young boy, Paul. During a festival of the blessing of the sea, Julien meets his old friend Fourcheville, who introduces him to Gilberte, his lovely wife. They become lovers, and Jeanne courageously accepts this new tryst. But Fourcheville discovers the lovers in a mobile wooden bath-house, which he pushes down from the top of the cliff…

And it is the cliffs at Jobourg that Alexandre Astruc chose for the dramatic conclusion of his movie.
