Utah Beach / Le Roosevelt

A marée basse, la mer va loin à Utah Beach. On se promène pendant des heures sur les bancs de sable où les vagues ont gravé leurs propres souvenirs.

Où peut-on manger à deux pas d'un blockhaus allemand? Au Roosevelt, à Utah Beach. Le propriétaire, M. Franck Méthivier, a aménagé cette relique de la guerre, attenante à son restaurant, en musée à la mémoire des soldats américains qui en avaient fait un centre de communications juste après le Débarquement.

Après la guerre, la maison de pêcheurs devint un restaurant, et le blockhaus servit de cave à vin et de garde-manger.

Puis, en 1994, lors du 50e anniversaire du Débarquement, deux vétérans de ce groupe visitèrent la cave. Une lampe électrique et quelques bougies firent apparaître sur le mur de gauche un nom puis un autre. Se produisit alors un frénétique déménagement de bouteilles, jusqu'à ce qu'apparaissent finalement les noms des 18 membres du groupe qui étaient là en 1944.

Au long des années, M. Méthivier a restauré l'intérieur dans son aspect de 1944. Le bunker regroupe maintenant un équipement radio, des photos d'anciens occupants, ainsi que des souvenirs de l'époque.

At low tide, the sea goes very far out on Utah Beach. You can walk for hours with only the wind and the seagulls, on the sand banks where the waves have carved their own memories.

Where can you have a meal just a few steps from a German bunker? At the restaurant Le Roosevelt, at Utah Beach. The owner, Franck Méthivier, has restaured these remains from the war, part of his building, as a museum dedicated to the memory of the group of American soldiers who used it for a communications center in 1944.

After the war, the fisherman's house became a restaurant, and the bunker became the wine cellar.

Then, in 1994, during the 50th Anniversary of D-Day, two veterans from that group stopped by and asked to visit the bunker. With a flashlight and a few candles, they discovered a name carved in the concrete, then another. Frantically, they moved bottles around, and found the names of all the servicemen in their group.

In the following years, Mr. Méthivier restored the inside of the bunker as it was in 1944, with the radio equipment, photos and souvenirs from that time.

Utah Beach: 65e Anniversaire du Débarquement / 65th Anniversary of D-Day

Utah Beach, c'est la plage du Débarquement oubliée. C'est vrai que le Débarquement y fut moins difficile qu'à Omaha La Sanglante, et puis, c'est loin de Paris, loin de Caen, loin de Bayeux. Et c'est dans la Manche, et les gens de la Manche préfèrent la côte ouest du Cotentin.
Alors, par un beau jour de semaine, même en été, vous pouvez avoir cette belle plage à vous tous seuls.

D-Day. Obama est-il à bord?
C'était juste après 5 heures ce 6 Juin. Le Président Obama venait de quitter Omaha Beach. Un hélicoptère venait de survoler la plage, puis deux autres hélicoptères américains suivirent, à basse altitude.
Les visiteurs se ruèrent vers la borne kilométrique 0, se posant tous la même question: Est-ce que Barack Obama est à bord de l'un de ces appareils?
On sait seulement qu'il avait survolé la Pointe du Hoc quelques minutes plus tôt.

Utah Beach is the forgotten D-Day beach. The landings here were much easier than at Bloody Omaha, there is no drmatic cemetery. On top of that, it's far from Paris and from the larger towns in Normandy. And it's in the department of Manche, and the people of the Manche favor the beaches on the west coast of the Cotentin.

Which is why, by a beautiful summer weekday, you may well have this beautiful beach all to yourself.

D-Day. Is Obama on board ?
If was shortly after 5 pm on June 6. President Obama had just left Omaha Beach.
An helicopter had flown over the beach, then two other American helicopters flew over at low altitude. Several visitors ran to the kilometer marker 0, all asking the same question : « Is Barack Obama in one of the helicopters ?
A few minutes before, the President of the United States had flown over the Pointe du Hoc.

Promenade sur la plage à Utah Beach, un jour de Juillet en 2007, avec gros pull et bonnet de laine, et rencontre avec ce vieux pieu buriné par les éléments.

Peu après que les 600 hommes du 2ème Bataillon du 8ème Régiment d'Infanterie de la 4ème Division d'Infanterie du Général Raymond Barton prennent d'assaut les dunes de La Madeleine, le Lieutenant Janhke, qui commandait les fortifications allemandes, assistait, impuissant, à la prise de contrôle de la plage par les alliés.
Le jeune Lieutenant ne put que constater la désorganisation de son système défensif: canons hors d'usage, de nombreux hommes à terre.

En dernier recours, il tenta d'utiliser l'ultime arme en sa possession contre les chars du Colonel Huffer : les Goliaths, petits robots à chenilles, chargés d'explosifs, mais leur système de guidage très fragile avait été endommagé par les bombardements, et ils tombèrent vite en panne, sous l'oeil surpris et amusé des soldats américains.

Shortly after the 600 men belonging to the 2nd Battallion of the 8th Infantry Division of the 4th Division under the command of General Barton landed on the beach in front of the dunes of La Madeleine, Lieutenant Jahnke, who commanded the German strongpoint, watched powerless the allies took control of the beach.
The young Lieutenant couldn't help but see how disorganized his defense system was : artillery guns out of use, many wounded men.

As a last resort, he tried using the final weapon he had against Colonel Huffer's tanks : the Goliath, small wheeled robots loaded with explosives, but their fragile guiding system had been damaged by the allied bombing. They soon broke down, under the surprised and amused eyes of the American soldiers.
