Pendant les préparatifs pour l'Opération Overlord, le Débarquement allié en Normandie, l'accès aux ports fût considéré comme absolument essentiel. Pour complémenter les ports artificiels à Omaha beach et à Arromanches, 11 ports de pêche attirèrent l'attention du Corps du Génie de l'armée américaine, parmi eux, Grandcamp.
Le récit qui suit vient de l'histoire de l'US Army Corps of Engineers:

L'accès au port de Grandcamp, un petit port de pêche et centre de villégiature à huit kilomètres à l'ouest de Omaha beach, se fait par un chenal de 50 pieds de large, entre deux jetées. Ces jetées s'étendent 350 pieds sur la plage à partir du port proprement dit, un bassin rectangulaire avec un quai en béton et une rampe de lancement. Les informations disponibles font mention d'une profondeur minimum de huit pieds à marée haute, ce qui rend possible l'entrée de LCTs et de petits cargos côtiers. le port étant vulnérable aux démolitions ennemies, le Génie ne pouvait garantir son état, mais il espérait l'ouvrir pour le 20 juin, avec un but de 500 tonnes débarquées par jour. Le port allait être géré par la 11e Compagnie Portuaire, avec un détachement administratif, une section de vehicules lourds et une compagnie de commande des transports.

During the planning for Operation Overlord, the Allied landings in Normandy, access to some ports facilities wea deemed essential. To complement the artificial harbors at Omaha and Arromanches, 11 small ports were considered, among them Grandcamp.
The following comes from the US Army Corps of Engineers:

Access to Grandcamp, a small fishing port and summer resort about five miles west of OMAHA, was through a fifty-foot-wide channel between two jetties. The jetties extended from the beach for about 350 feet to the port proper, a rectangular artificial basin with a concrete wharf and one quay. From the information available, planners had estimated the minimum high-tide depth of channel and basin at eight feet, making it possible to bring in LCTs and small coasters. Because the little port was so vulnerable to enemy demolitions the engineers were not sure that it could be used at all, but they hoped it could be opened by 20 June, with a goal of 500 tons of cargo daily thereafter. A TC port company, a quartermaster truck platoon, and an administration detachment from Headquarters, 11th Port, were to operate Grandcamp port.
