Il n'y a pas de visite dans le val de Saire sans un petit détour, depuis le village de Gatteville jusqu'au bout de la route, où on se retrouve face au phare.
Ce jour-là, il s'élançait, point d'exclamation de granit beige, sous un beau ciel bleu, devant une mer calme et bleu marine.
Haut de 75 m et construit en granit, le phare domine le raz de Barfleur, particulièrement dangereux pour la navigation en raison de forts courants et de nombreux rochers.
Le phare fut construit entre 1829 et 1834 par l'ingénieur de La Rue.
Il comporte autant de marches que de jours dans l'année, autant de fenêtres que de semaines.
Ses rayons lumineux croisent ceux du phare de l'île de Wright en Angleterre.

The lighthouse, built of granite between 1829 and 1834, protects the area around the point of Barfleur, especially dangerous because of numerous reefs and unusually strong currents.
To reach the top, you will climb as many steps as there are days in a year, and you will walk by as many windows as there are weeks.
With a height of nearly 250ft., its beams overlap those of the lighthouse on the Isle of Wright in England.
