C'était l'heure de la pause. Assis sur la terrasse du Café du Port, à Omonville, on se mettait le paysage plein les yeux.
Derrière la digue, le mât d'un voilier avançait tout doucement, au ralenti, vers l'entrée du port. Un pêcheur qui venait de rentrer, vint à terre dans une minuscule coquille, l'échoua sur les galets, la mit sur son dos, puis remonta la plage comme une grosse tortue. Un autre mât apparût, accompagné du ronronnement d'un moteur: Un voilier à la remorque, qui entra dans le port le premier. L'équipage lança un grand cri de victoire.
Quelques minutes plus tard, les deux équipes s'installèrent à côté de nous, les vainqueurs trinquant à leur victoire et à l'esprit de sportivité.
Et le calme revint.
Omonville-la-Rogue se situe sur la côte nord du Cap de la Hague, à l'ouest de Cherbourg. Autrefois utilisé comme mouillage d'attente pour franchir à marée propice le raz Blanchard de la pointe de La Hague, le port d'Omonville-la-Rogue a été bâtit sur une fosse, si bien qu'à marée basse, il garde toujours près de 8 m de profondeur d'eau.
It was time for a break, so we stopped at the Cafe du Port, on the harbor at Omonville-La-Rogue, and sat outside, watching the scenery. Behind the stone jetty, the mast of a sailboat inched slowly towards the port entrance. A fisherman returned in his little dinghy, stepped ashore, lifted the dinghy over his back, and started walking up the stony beach, a human turtle coming back home. The sailboat mast kept creeping along, as another sailboat appeared at the end of the jetty, pulled by a motorboat. As the towrope was released, the crew sent a loud cheer: they had won the regatta. They waited for the other sailboat to arrive, then they all stepped ashore, sat near us at the terrasse, and ordered a round of drinks, to their victory and the spirit of sportsmanship.

Omonville-La-Rogue is located on the North coast of the Cape of La Hague, west of Cherbourg. In the old days, the harbor was used by boats waiting for the right tide to sail through the strong currents around the cape. The port, protected by a stone jetty, is built on a natural cavity and, even at low tide, is over 25 feet deep.
