On the beach of the Ecalgrain Bay, in the Hague region at the tip of the Cotentin peninsula, a little girl dances in the puddles of water left behind by the ebbing tide.

---------------------------

"In this place at the end of the world, I cherish a short hike which is, for me, the prettiest of all. I leave from the tiny harbor of Goury on a path along the shore lined with low stone walls, like the ones we see along Irish roads. Facing the sea, small vegetable gardens, neatly laid out, show a delicate touch in a landscape that can unleash a terrible violence. Past the houses of the village of La Roche, somber granite walls and bluish slate roofs, all huddled together, the path, perched on the edge of the cliffs, is like a long balcony with an ocean view. And then the birds sing, and you arrive at the baie d'Ecalgrain .."

Claudie Gallay was born in the Alps, she writes novels and teaches elementary school. She discovers Normandy, and especially La Hague, which gives her the inspiration for 'Les Déferlantes', published in 2008, a novel grey like the sky and the sea that are its setting, grey like the souls and the moods of the people of the region.

Yes, Sharon, this is the perfect secluded beach: a half-moon of buck colored sand surrounded by cliffs covered with heather and broom. Too bad the water is always cold.
