Le Zef est un dériveur de promenade et d'initiation dessiné par l'architecte naval Nivelt, l'un des premiers a avoir démocratisé la voile de loisir en France. Il était construit par les ateliers La Prairie à L'Isle-d'Espagnac (Charente), spécialisés dans la fabrication de matériel de camping ; la société semble avoir été liquidée en 1975.
Sa diffusion, à plus de 15 000 exemplaires, a été un vrai succès, même pour l'époque, considérée comme l'âge d'or du dériveur. La fabrication a été reprise un temps par la société Piel Sidep (groupe Guy Cotten, spécialiste en vêtements de mer).
Ce dériveur tout en rondeurs est très simple à gréer. Sa voilure est composée d'un foc de petite taille et d'une grand-voile lattée importante sur laquelle figure un Z caractéristique. Les premiers Zef datent de 1962, mesurant 3,60 m pour un poids de 90 kg gréé, leur coque est en polyester projeté sur moule avec fibre, le gréement est en acier inoxydable, le pont, le liston avant, le banc, la dérive et le gouvernail sont en bois, ce qui lui donne, à notre époque ou le bois se fait de plus en plus rare, un style rétro et sympathique.

A Zef is a sailing dinghy designed by naval architect Nivelt for recreation and initiation to sailing. It was one of the first to popularize the sport of sailing. It was built by La Prairie, a camping equipment manufacturer in L'Isle-d'Espagnac (Charente). The company apparently went bankrupt in 1975.
About 15 000 boats were built, which at the time, was considered a big commercial success in this golden age of the sailing dinghy. The company Piel Sidep, belonging to Guy Cotten, specialist of outdoor clothing for seafarers, took over the construction of the Zef for a while after 1975.
This dinghy, with its rounded shape, is very easy to sail. The rigging consists of a small jib and a main sail inscribed with the characteristic Z logo. The Zef was born in 1962, at just over 10 feet and 200 pounds fully rigged. The hull is constructed of polyester and fiberglass, the masts are built in stainless steel, while the deck, the rubbing strake, the bench, rudder and keel are made of wood, which give it, at a time when wood is becoming rare in naval construction, a bit of a passé look.
